Armour-rock wall and building pad, Salt Spring Island
Most of Salt Spring is thin soil over bedrock. Getting a septic field, a driveway or a foundation into it takes a hammer, a machine that fits the site, and someone who has already dug the road you live on.

What's under Salt Spring
Almost every job on this island runs into the same three things. Knowing about them early is what keeps a quote from doubling halfway through.

- Thin soil, hard rock
- Much of the island is a shallow layer of soil sitting on bedrock. A septic field or a foundation that would take a day on flat mainland ground can take a hammer and a week here.
- Every system gets filed
- In BC an onsite septic system has to be planned and installed by an authorized person and filed with Island Health. It is not a job you can have a friend do with a rented machine.
- Access decides the job
- Narrow driveways, standing timber and steep ground decide which machine can reach your site, and that decides the price. Worth looking at before anything gets quoted.
